Devotion for Monday May 19th

1 Samuel 15:22-24 (NIV)                     22 But Samuel replied:                           “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.

Though these two scriptures only give us a glimpse in Saul’s life it is not hard to see what is going on.  Saul has turned his back on a direct command from God.  Why?  He was afraid of what others might think, so he does what would seem an acceptable alternative for the time and scarifies to God.  God is not interested in our sacrifice.  He wants our heart.  Many a man has made sacrifices for their wives instead of doing the right thing, but she like God wants to be number one.  God compares this to idolatry.  It is none other than self worship.  Saul cares more about his self than God.  It is also compared to divination.  Saul is trying to manipulate God by offering sacrifices to Him.  (Divination is an act that was punishable by death.)  Oddly these sacrifices he would not have if it was not for God.  God is not impressed with our sacrifices.  He just wants our heart, and if you love Him you will obey Him.      Pastor Jeffery Lane
